The practice of providing (back?) links that create (strange?) loops was inspired by page numbers that appear in the margins of the bibliography for Concrete Mathematics (Grahm, Knuth, and Patashnik, 578).

The dialogue between student and teacher mimics the exchange between Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway in that wonderfully notorious scene from Chinatown; it asserts that stereotypical notions of blogs, websites, and books may be combined to produce a union that is superior to any proper subset of the three.
